These two fascinating Central American countries combine well, offering a blend of history, culture, nature and diving.

Guatemala is Central America in miniature and has everything from ancient Mayan ruins to tropical rainforests, colonial churches to Indian markets. Contrast this with the English speaking exuberant Caribbean-flavoured Belize, with its beaches and coral reefs.

In one holiday explore the colonial city of Antigua, the forest clad Mayan ruins of Tikal, the Blue Hole of Belize, plus all that both these small countries have to offer in between.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Fly to Guatemala City

Fly to Guatemala, arriving later the same day and overnight.

  2. Days 2-2 : Travel to Antigua de Guatemala

It is only a short drive to the former capital Antigua at the foot of Agua Volcano. Here you will stay in a restored 17th century monastery, Casa Santo Domingo, for three nights.

Located in the heart of historical Antigua, this enclave of understated ecclesial delight is one place not to be missed. Offering understated luxury and comfort without compromising its original features, a stay at Casa Santo Domingo is a unique and fascinating experience.

  3. Days 3-4 : Discover the scenic, colonial city of Antigua

The ideal way to explore the city’s cobbled streets, with its pretty squares, ornate churches and colourful colonial buildings, is on foot. Intriguing alleyways and a multitude of shops, bars and cafés entice you to explore. The splendid surrounding scenery of the three towering volcanoes heightens the senses. Enjoy a half day guided tour.

Extend your stay and visit the Indian markets at Chichicastenango, a three and a half hour drive from Antigua. Alternatively head to Lake Atilan, often quoted as being one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.

  4. Days 5-5 : Flores & the ancient Mayan city of Tikal

This morning you will transfer to the town of Flores, a short flight from Guatemala City and the springboard for exploring the ancient Mayan city of Tikal. Spend two nights here at your chosen accommodation.

We recommend a stay at La Lancha Lodge or the boutique property of Bolontiku, which are set on the shores of beautiful Lake Petén and perfectly placed for kayaking, stand up paddle boarding or swimming.

  5. Days 6-6 : Explore Tikal National Park

Enjoy a full day visit to the spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal, deep in the Guatemalan jungle.

Situated in the north-east of the country, Tikal was a vast Mayan city and remained at the centre of Mayan civilisation for almost 1,000 years. Now a UNESCO World Heritage SIte, the sheer size of the temples is overwhelming, and the surrounding jungle adds a mysterious, almost mystical quality.

  6. Days 7-7 : Continue to Belize

Transfer by road or air to Belize and continue to your resort. We suggest staying for six nights or more at the exceptonal Hamanasi Resort in Southern Belize.

  7. Days 8-12 : Dive, relax or explore!

Immerse yourself in a mix of diving on the barrier reef or more land-based adventure, visiting one of many local attractions such as the Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve.

Divers will enjoy exploring the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, where the pristine seascape includes spur and groove reefs with hard and soft corals, sand channels and wall diving.

  8. Day 13: Transfer to Belize City & depart

Transfer back to Belize City by road and a short flight, connecting with your international flight back to the UK.

  9. Day 14: Arrive UK
