During his short residency at Siladen Resort & Spa, expert Dr Richard Smith will provide daily photography workshops and presentations dedicated to the local marine life of this magnificent location.

This trip is a journey of discovery and education as divers of all abilities join expert Dr Smith in Bunaken National Marine Park, to achieve a greater understanding of the local marine life. Richard will be on hand to help with creature identification, camera techniques and general fish talk, helping enthusiasts gain more from both their diving and photography skills. You will be based at the exceptional Siladen Resort & Spa, located on the beautiful tropical island Pulau Siladen in the heart of the marine park. 

Dr Richard Smith dedicates much of his time leading trips to many of the best dive locations in the world, teaching the participants about the marine environment. It’s no surprise he’s chosen this world-class location for one of his popular dive photography workshops.

Typical itinerary

  1. Day 1: Depart the UK

    Depart on an overnight flight to Singapore and onwards to Manado in north Sulawesi, Indonesia.

  2. Day 2: Arrive Manado

    You will be met on arrival and transferred to Siladen Resort & Spa where you will spend the next ten nights. Once you’ve checked in, the rest of the day is at leisure.

  3. Days 3-10 : Bunaken diving and workshop with Dr Richard Smith

    Your diving package begins today. Enjoy 16 guided boat dives in the Bunaken National Marine Park over the next eight days.

    Renowned marine biologist and underwater photographer Dr Richard Smith will be in residence at this luxurious resort, offering daily presentations and workshops on subjects such as critter hunting and photography, animal behaviour, best photography practice on a muck dive and the secret life of the pygmy seahorse. These are open to divers of all abilities looking to learn more about marine life, hone their photography skills and get the most out of their dives.

    The area offers incredibly high levels of marine biodiversity, warm water and clear visibility. Its pristine walls are covered in soft corals and sponges, and these in turn are home to barracuda, napoleon wrasse, moray eels, turtles and a wealth of smaller sized marine life.

  4. Day 11: Day at leisure

    Your final day is yours at leisure to off-gas. As well as relaxing in resort, there are opportunities for plenty of local experiences to participate in (local charge) such as cooking, dolphin watching, sightseeing in Manado, hiking or a Tangkoko rainforest tour to see the local wildlife, including the extraordinary tarsier.

  5. Day 12: Depart Manado, overnight in Singapore

    This morning is yours to relax before the transfer to the airport for your flight to Singapore.

    On arrival, make your way to the Crowne Plaza Changi Airport for an overnight stay. The rest of day is at leisure to relax in resort or visit the famous sights and locations of Singapore.

  6. Day 13: Depart Singapore and arrive UK

    Today is a daytime flight from Singapore, arriving in the UK later the same day.

Dr Smith studied marine ecology and evolution, completing the first ecological research on pygmy seahorses as part of his Phd to become one of the world’s leading experts.

Richard spent a number of years as the in-house naturalist at Wakatobi Dive Resort Indonesia and more recently has been the resident marine biologist on board the Dewi Nusantara luxury liveaboard. An acclaimed photographer and engaging speaker, his work has been published widely in the UK, USA, Europe and Australia, including his regular column for Sport Diver magazine.

He also supports conservation initiatives such as ARKive, The Zoological Society of London and EDGE of Existence (Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered) with images and expertise. Richard has travelled widely throughout the Asia Pacific region and regularly leads trips to some of the world’s top dive destinations.
